Abbot(t) Epitaphs
All were found on gravestones in the Old South Church Burial Ground, Andover, Massachusetts:
Phebe Abbot, 1742-1800, wife of Deacon Isaac Abbot
“TIME WAS I STOOD AS THOU DO’ST NOW
AND VIEW’D THE DEAD AS THOU DO’ST ME
ERE LONG THOU’LL BE AS LOW AS I,
AND OTHERS STAND & GAZE AT THEE”
Hepzibah Abbot, 1773-1800, wife of Mr. Isaac Abbot
“BLESSED ARE THE DEAD
THE SPIRIT SAID
WHO DIE IN JESUS LOVE
THEIR LABORS CEASE
THEIR SOULS HAVE PEACE
THEIR WORKS ARE CROWNED ABOVE”
Samuel Abbot, died August 10, 1769, age 6 years," killed by a cart"
“Tho’ sudden was the stroke,
Which stopt his vital breath,
He must obey, twas God who spoke
And yield to cruel death.”
Samuel Abbot, died October 1, 1793, age 18 months:
“Sleep happy baby and take thy rest,
God call’d you home, he thought it best.”
Patty Abbot, died June 4, 1797, age 13 years
“Affliction fore long time I bore
Physicians was in vain
Till God did please & death did seize
To ease me of my pain.”
Mary Abbot, died August 8, 1792, age 70 years
“Come living friends see where I lie,
Remember you are born to die
Bid to prepare for death and Heaven
Is all for which the dangers life is given.”
Deacon Zebediah Abbot, died November 24, 1793, age 54 years
“Happy death for him How highly blest
The soul departs and wings its way to rest.
The loss of such a friend we deeply mourn
While he’s to bliss supreme by Angels borne.”
Captain Nehemiah Abbott, First Steward of the Theological Seminary in Andover
"Learn then, ye living; by the mouth be taught,
Of all these sepulchers instructors true,
That soon or late, death also is your lot,
And the opening grave may yawn for you."
Francis Ellingwood Abbott, Ph.D., He wrote this epitaph one week before his death
"Do you think that I despair. God is ! How can I despair? Doing right is worth all that it costs and my whole being ask's no more."
